Dick Brass, the former vice president of Microsoft yesterday wrote to New York Times said that Microsoft’s increasing lack of innovation , and also the influence in the technology industry is gradually declining. Today, Frank X. Shaw, vice president , published a public response to this article on Microsoft’s official blog. Reads as follows:
Dick Brass said on the New York Times that Microsoft’s good day has been away, he use some examples of his experience as an argument to support Microsoft’s lack of competitiveness and innovation, of course, we do not agree with him. Precisely, his aricle gave us an opportunity to clarify our views on innovation.
From a macro perspective, we believe that innovation have capacity to make a positive impact on the world. As Microsoft, innovation is not just a good idea, a great idea or even a cool idea, we evaluated the impact of broad aspects for our work.
To make his point, Dick generally focused on ClearType, noting that this technology was “stifled” by existing business groups. For the record, ClearType now ships with every copy of Windows we make, and is installed on around a billion PCs around the world. This is a great example of innovation with impact: innovation at scale.
Now, you could argue that this should have happened faster.Sometimes this is true, but for a product company involved in a very wide range of users, the most important thing is the innovation at scale, not just the speed. As Dick mentioned flat machine and Office, I would like to mention the product called OneNote, essentially speaking, it is designed for flat-panel machine, and now it also become an important part of Office.
Another point worth addressing is Dick’s assertion that Xbox is “at best an equal contender in the game console business.” Fact is, Xbox 360 was the first high-definition console. It was the first to digitally deliver games, music, TV shows and movies in 1080p high definition. The first to bring Facebook and Twitter to the living room. And with Project Natal for Xbox 360 launching this year, it will be the first to deliver controller-free experiences that anyone can enjoy—a magical experience for everyone that Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, and Time magazine each named one of the top inventions of 2009.
In the world of “software + services”, we pioneered part of out strategy of the gaming service is Xbox LIVE, today, more than 23 million users to access the service play games, chat, listening to music, watching movies, worldwidely… …
You always have the opportunity to do more, go faster, more innovative way , more interesting products and services to customers around the world, which is exactly what we believed in. Of course, thanks Dick and the ClearType team and the contribution of other person, ClearType is Microsoft’s innovative and a good example.
